General-purpose AI (GPAI) model
A general-purpose AI model is trained on broad data at scale, displays significant generality, and can competently perform a wide range of distinct tasks — for example a large language model or a multimodal foundation model.
GPAI models (Article 3(63)) have their own obligation set under Articles 53–55, in force since 2 August 2025. Providers must keep technical documentation, share information downstream, publish a copyright policy and a training-data summary, and — where the model carries systemic risk — meet stricter evaluation and cybersecurity duties.
